Really, it sounds like you all listen to 'rap' on the radio and think all of it is garbage. Tip: Lil wayne != rap. Soulja boy != rap. Every 'rap' song you hear on the radio != rap. You're all entitled to your opinions, and even if you listened to some real rap you most likely still wouldn't like it, which is fine. But try actually listening to the good stuff before you make dumb comments. You don't see people saying 'lol rock is just guyz plucking strings hitting drums and singing', which would be equally as dumb as some of the comments in this thread.

Arkantos, for good rap, look into Cunninlynguists
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=311OkSX-rOA
I used to love rock, but these days it's very very difficult for me to listen to any rock I actually like. I like incubus and 311, but that's about it.

Guys, both rock and rap suck...Miley Cyrus FTW!!
ok, that was a joke :P
It is hard do compair the two diffrent genres because of various personality types, how you were raised, what you were raised with and various other factors. A better question would have been "Which do you like better and why?"
I personally prefer music with a darker aspect that reflects my life in the past (see Korn Thoughtless), I realize there is some good rap but don't listen to it most of the time because it gets old to me.

Well, if someone just moves around spasmatically, talking too hard to understand, abusing swears and using them as punctuation marks, while there's some crappy beat in the background... I guess he is a metally handicapped person.

Plucking strings, hitting drums and singing takes talent. You can't learn it in 2 weeks. Rap? Put some junk background on your PC, get someone who can read very fast (don't worry, he doesn't even have to try very much - people will still think it's "awesome") and write something about, I don't know, how life is bad, living in a big town and earning only $2000 a month. What am I saying - having parents that earn only $2000 a month.

Here's what I want you to do. Stop listening to mainstream, listen to some underground rappers who can actually rap. Then I want you to come up with lyrics as good as they can, and rap. Then I want you to come up with a freestyle on the spot. Post it on here. I mean, if everyone and anyone can rap, there should be no problem, right?
Here's a random freestyle by Immortal Technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUBxB0mZj6M
Far from a great freestyle. I want to see you freestyle as good as him, since you think anyone can.
Until then, your ignorance makes me laugh.

you are very right people think if they can rhyme bunch of words they can rap you have to have good lyrics like eminem he has great lyrics.

QFT.
I'm on the rock side of this debate.
but that guy can rap
he has amazing lyrical abilities and can freestyle like no ones business.
Unfortunately people say rap and all that comes to mind is T-Pain, Lil Wayne, T.I. and Young Jeezy.
Fortunately those guys all suck ass. There are alot of good rappers out there
But I still prefer rock

I am talking about the "Like A Boss" from Slim Thug, not the "The Lonely Island" parody version. I belive Slim Thug was quite serious when he wrote the origional version.

Its more to do with that you're making rap and techno, which I assume you don't even understand into some derogatory meaning for even liking it. Why should people think you are even mature enough to have the mental capabilities and insight into some genre's of music, when you are personally attacking the people for liking it?

I used to listen to rap (stuff like Wu Tang Clan) but I got sick of it. These days... There is some rap I like, but I can't listen to it for that long before it annoys me, so I prefer rock.
Also instantly disliking someone based on what music they listen to is dumb.

personally i listen to mostly hardcore/punk like black flag and lifetime, but i still like to listen to stuff like A Tribe Called Quest and Pendulum every now and then. You dont have to be such a close-minded kid your entire life. Also every genre has its crap, just because what you listen to involves a guitar doesnt mean youre suddenly above everyone else.

Right now, the only kid here is you. Just because you call people "kid, kid, kid" doesn't make you an adult.
Funny how you say I insult people that like that music. I don't. I just feel sorry for them, that's all. I insult people that MAKE that "music".
Even funnier is how you try to defend with the argument "people like what they like" and so on, yet you deny my right to say that I think rap and techno are the lowest form of art.

First off, Arkatos you're probably one of the more immature posters I've read on this board. Every time I seem to see a post from you, it's some load of ludacris bull shit or an attempt to make the opposing poster look stupid. You mentioned you're 17 and you think you're mature. Give me a break man.
Second music is pretty much my passion and biggest escape. I've seen hundreds of bands live and can honestly say I live for the stuff now. I've seen bands ranging from AFI to Marilyn Manson and everything in between. Nine Inch Nails is my personal favorite as I'm am pretty much obsessed with them. The amount of shit Trent Reznor has been through and looking at where he is now in his life is pretty remarkable. He incorporates some of the most thought out ideas with sounds and instruments no one else will ever come close to duplicating.
In short, rap of this generation isn't worth more than I can throw it. T.I.? Lil' Wayne? Young Jeezy? Give me a break. MTV ruined a lot of stuff out there, including the culture of rap. I live in South Dakota, the biggest city that is, and I see these kids listening to this shit, I'm sorry but you're not a gangster...Your parents are probably farmers and you're rebeling against jack shit. Give me some good old 2pac, Dr. Dre, or NWA that actually had some substance to it. Until then, it's all cookie cutter wannabe's trying to get their shit on MTV. And for the record Fall Out Boy and Nickelback can blow it out their ass.

Personally I prefer Rock but I don't just listen to rock however I am no fan of rap. I see where some people are coming from some people take their morals from rap music watching the way they act, dress and talk. I feel that judging someone by the music they listen to is really wrong though but finding a good person who listens to rap and doesn't take their morals from it is like 1 in 100. I live in a apartment and the man above me plays his music non stop I can hear every word ive tried talking to him, calling the leasing office and calling the police. When the police arrive normally the situation stops.
